Billon antoninianus of Claudius II Gothicus, 268-270 AD. Obverse: IMPCCLAVDIVSAVG - Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: PROVIDENTAVG - Providentia standing left, holding wand over globe and cornucopia, behind her stands a column. Not examined outside of sleeve. Despite his humble origins, controversial accession, and brief reign, Claudius II was among the few notable and effective emperors of the 50-year period known as the third century crisis. His victory over the Goths at the Battle of Naisus earned him his epithet and secured the Danube frontier for decades.
